On the day I was diagnosed with leukemia, my first reaction wasn't to cry. It was to breathe a sigh of relief. Since I wasn't their biological child anyway, dying meant I wouldn't owe them anything anymore. When I was six years old, I fought with my younger brother over a limited-edition Transformer toy. My mother dragged me into the corner of the living room, gripping my arm so tight it bruised. She looked me dead in the eye and enunciated every single word: "You are not our biological child. Everything you have in this house is a privilege we graciously allow you to have." From that day on, I never asked for a single thing. My brother got brand-new Nike cleats; I wore his hand-me-down gym clothes. My brother took private piano lessons; I washed dishes in the kitchen every night just to earn my breakfast money for the next morning. I lived like a piece of luggage temporarily checked into this house, constantly waiting for the day I would be thrown out. After my diagnosis, the oncologist told me that for a bone marrow transplant to be successful, it was absolutely critical to find a biological match. I didn't tell my family. While secretly searching the national registries for my biological parents, I took the entire life savings I had hoarded for seven years and put a down payment on a cemetery plot. That was, until last night.
