That night, Troy sent a crew of hired thugs who cornered me in a dim alley behind my building. I was on the pavement, bruised and torn open, when Brendan stepped out of the dark. He scattered the men with cold, brutal efficiency, then knelt down and wrapped his wool coat around my trembling shoulders. Pulling me into the circle of his warmth, he whispered, "I’ve seen you at your most vulnerable. I’ll protect you from now on. Let me take care of you."
