Mom and Dad switch my and my brother's weekly allowances to a lottery ticket system to toughen us up. Each weekend, Daryl Gray and I get five scratch-off lottery tickets, and whatever we win becomes our allowance for the following week. Daryl is always lucky enough to win at least 150 dollars per ticket, which is enough for him to enjoy eating out, buying new sneakers, and even buying juices and snacks for his classmates. However, the most I have ever won is a single 50-dollar ticket. Usually, I'll only win about ten dollars in total, but if I'm really down on my luck, I won't even win a single dollar from them. If that happens, I'll have to rely on the extra five dollars I saved from the week before to pull me through the rest of the week, living on a plain waffle for a dollar a day with free tap water from the school cafeteria. I have tried asking Mom and Dad for a fixed weekly allowance of 50 dollars instead, but Dad coldly refuses. He says, "The rules have always been the same for you and Daryl. You're just unlucky. What's the point of blaming us for your bad luck?" One day, I'm starving so badly that I secretly open the cabinet where they keep the scratch-off tickets while they are out. The tickets are neatly arranged into two stacks, clearly labeled with Daryl's name and mine. On a whim, I carefully pull a ticket from Daryl's stack. I hurry back to my room, scratch it, and realize I won 100 dollars. I immediately rush to the convenience store to claim my prize. However, the store clerk looks at the ticket in my hands and laughs. She tells me, "You're joking, right? You can't redeem these homemade lottery tickets here." At that moment, I feel an utter despair overwhelming me.
