A future call from my son reveals the truth: he's not mine. My husband has been sleeping with my best friend for years, and the daughter I "lost" in childbirth was stolen and given away. When they steal my promotion, gaslight me, and put nails in my tires to kill my unborn baby, I stop playing wife. I take back my career, find my real daughter, and let karma bury them—bankruptcy, abandonment, and a son begging me through a screen to undo what he chose.

第1章

I call my husband to pick up our son, but my son answers from fifteen years in the future. I freeze when my son’s face appears on my screen. He looks almost exactly like Ryan. I get excited. “Jason, do you have a little sister now?” “Is Dad still busy with work? Does he still take us out on the boat every year?” But with every question I ask, Jason’s expression gets colder. Until finally, he looks at me with nothing but disgust. “Why haven’t you divorced Dad yet?” “You knew Dad didn’t love you. Why couldn’t you just let him go? Why couldn’t you let him be with Sophie?” “If you hadn’t refused to leave him, Sophie wouldn’t have gotten depressed and jumped off a boat.” The call suddenly ends. I stare at the blank screen, still trying to make sense of what Jason just said. Then the front door swings open. “Mom!” Jason runs inside and throws his arms around me. I freeze. His face is exactly the same as the one I just saw on my screen. Only younger. Still my little boy. Ryan comes in right behind him, carrying Sophie's bag. And Sophie is right beside him. “Mom, I ran into Sophie after school. Can she stay for dinner?” Jason hugs me even tighter. And then I remember something. Whenever the three of us went shopping, Ryan would carry my bag. He’d carry Sophie’s, too. Back then, I thought he was simply being a gentleman. I never imagined there was something going on between them. Ryan hands me a bottle of perfume. “I saw it at the mall and thought you’d like it.” I glance at the brand on the bottle. My heart sinks. I saw its official account post a promotion this morning: Buy the necklace, get the matching perfume. I look at Sophie. She’s wearing that exact necklace. I look away quietly, then force a smile. “Dinner’s ready. Let’s eat.” Jason is already climbing into his chair. He reaches for the dinner rolls and passes one to Sophie. “Sophie, here. This is for you.” She smiles and runs her hand through his hair. Ryan immediately frowns. “Mom worked hard on dinner. Why aren’t you getting Mom some?” He reaches across the table and puts a piece of roasted chicken on my plate. “You like this.” I press my lips together. I don’t eat dark meat. Sophie laughs and picks it right off my plate. “Ryan, seriously? What kind of husband are you? Claire doesn’t eat dark meat. I’m the one who likes it.” Suddenly, everything on the table tastes like nothing to me. Jason says he’s still hungry. Ryan gets up and brings him another dinner roll. Sophie reaches over and gently straightens Jason’s napkin. The three of them sit beneath the warm dining-room light. Somehow, I’m the one who looks like I don’t belong. After dinner, I get up to clear the plates. “We’re out of fruit,” I say, looking at Sophie. “I’m going out to get some. Sophie, Want to come?” Ryan’s eyes briefly meet Sophie’s before settling on me. “You don’t look well. Just sit down and rest. I’ll go with Sophie.” Sophie shoots me a quick glance. “Is that okay?” Ryan smiles. “You two have been friends forever. Claire won’t mind. Right?” I stack the dishes and nod. He grabs his keys. Then, without even thinking about it, he picks up Sophie’s coat too. The door closes behind them. The apartment goes completely quiet. Once they’re gone, I go into the bedroom, take the old tablet from the nightstand, and open the app connected to our car camera. The screen flickers on — Ryan is just shutting the car door. The next second, Ryan has Sophie pinned against the passenger seat. He kisses her so hard she can barely breathe. His hand is on the back of her neck. The other slides under her coat. Sophie tilts her head back, her voice shaking. “How much longer are we going to keep doing this? I don’t want to sneak around anymore.” Ryan lowers his head and lightly bites her ear. “Just wait a little longer.” “What about the divorce?” “I’ll tell her.” Tears fill Sophie’s eyes. “You always say that.” Ryan pulls her into his arms and speaks softly. “Sophie, just give me a little more time.” The tablet slips from my hand and lands on the carpet. I crouch down to pick it up. My hands are shaking so badly I can barely hold it. But the footage keeps rolling. Ryan reaches for the zipper on Sophie’s dress. Sophie gasps and starts undoing the buttons on his shirt. I run into the bathroom and grip the sink as I gag. My face looks ghostly in the mirror. Even my lips have gone pale. Eighteen years ago, I met Ryan outside the university library. I was helping a classmate carry some books when they slipped out of my hands and scattered across the ground. Ryan crouched down and helped me pick them up. One by one. He spent the next four years chasing me. On graduation day, he proposed to me in front of everyone. Sophie was my roommate during my sophomore year. When something happened to her family, I spent seven days straight running around with her. The police station. The hospital. The funeral. She had nowhere to go, so I gave her one of the bedrooms in the two-bedroom apartment I rented. Once, she came down with a fever of almost 103°F. I carried her downstairs and flagged down a car for her. I always thought I was lucky. I had a husband who loved me. A family. A best friend I thought would stay by my side for the rest of my life. Turns out, I was just the joke. I put the tablet back in the drawer and splash cold water on my face. That night, Ryan comes into the bedroom like nothing happened. He wraps his arms around me from behind and rests his chin on my shoulder. I don’t move. He reaches up and tucks a strand of hair behind my ear. “I got you the perfume because I wanted to make you happy.” “There’s something else too. I was going to tell you when you were in a better mood.” I pull away and turn to face him. “What is it?” The bedside lamp throws a soft yellow light over his face. Ryan looks completely calm. “I gave the promotion to Sophie.”

I stare at him and slowly sit up. “Why?” Ryan frowns. “The promotion means more work and more travel. Can you really handle all that?” “You have me. You have Jason. Why not just keep things the way they are?” “Sophie is single. She can put all her time into her career.” I can’t believe he’s actually saying this. My voice shakes. “I worked on that project for a year and a half.” “I brought in the client. I built the proposal. I spent months fixing and revising every part of it.” “And now you’re just giving it to her?” Ryan presses his lips together. “The promotion list is already public. It can’t be changed.” My whole body is shaking with anger. Everything I’ve been holding in all day finally blows up. I grab the glass from the nightstand and smash it onto the floor. “Ryan, what the hell are you talking about?” Glass shards fly everywhere. Water spreads across the carpet. Ryan freezes for a second, then crouches down and starts picking up the broken pieces. “You’re on your period. I’m not arguing with you.” He throws the glass shards into the trash. His voice is still completely calm. “I’ll make you some warm milk. I’ll sleep in the guest room tonight. Just calm down.” He’s trying to calm me down, but it only makes me angrier. I can’t even get the words out. After he closes the door, I sit on the edge of the bed. There are still a few pieces of glass near my feet. I pick up my phone. Then I open the contact of someone I haven’t spoken to in years and send one message. “I’ve made up my mind. Take me away.” The next morning, Ryan puts a warm drink on the table in front of me, like he always does. He pulls out my chair. “Did you sleep okay?” Jason bites into his toast. “Mom, I want to go to the aquarium this weekend.” I look at him. “Who are you going with?” He answers right away. “Sophie. She promised to take me to see the beluga whales.” Ryan speaks up before I can say anything. “He knows you’ve been working hard,” he says. “He probably just thought you’d want the weekend to yourself instead of running around with him.” I lower my eyes. My fingers curl around the warm cup Ryan put in front of me, and I take a small sip. It tastes sweet. And somehow, bitter too. At nine, Megan pulls up outside the office right on time. She’s my cousin. And she’s a divorce attorney. “The evidence is enough,” she tells me. “Once a child is old enough, the court can take his wishes into account.” I think about that phone call from fifteen years in the future. I have to fight for custody of Jason. I can’t just stand by and let my own son become the boy I saw on that call. When I get back to the office, there’s already a crowd gathered around the promotion announcement. Everyone is congratulating Sophie. “Sophie, drinks are on you now!” “Ryan really knows how to spot talent.” “You’re lucky your boss was willing to give you a shot.” Sophie stands in the middle of everyone, smiling. “Don’t say that. It was the whole team. Claire worked hard on the project too.” Ryan comes out of the conference room and sees me. He walks right over and explains himself in front of everyone. “I know Claire is capable. But she has a lot going on at home, and her son is still young. The job involves a lot of travel. Sophie was just a better fit.” Someone standing nearby immediately says, “That makes sense. Once a woman has a family, you have to put your family first.” I stare at Ryan. And suddenly, I remember what happened three years ago. Sophie had just joined the company. She was awful at the job. She was so nervous that she was scared to even answer client calls. I was the one who gave her some of my old accounts. I sent her my proposal templates. Even the outfit she wore to her first client meeting was picked out by me. I’ve had a hand in getting her this far. And now she’s climbed right over me to get to the top. That afternoon, we have a meeting. Ryan tells Sophie to sit in my old seat. She goes through the project materials I prepared, page by page. When the meeting ends, Ryan even praises her. “That was a clear approach.” But the PowerPoint she just presented is the exact one I stayed up until two in the morning finishing two days ago. That evening, Sophie has a client meeting. Ryan drives her there himself. I go home alone. I stand by the side of the road for a while. Then my stomach suddenly twists. I grab a trash can and start throwing up. By the time I stop, there’s nothing left but a little stomach acid. I end up going to the hospital. Half an hour later, the doctor puts my test results in front of me. “You’re a little over six weeks.” She slides the ultrasound over to me. “Don’t overwork yourself right now. And try to stay away from stress.” I stare at the blurry little shape on the screen. For a long time, I don’t say anything. Two years ago, on the night Jason started elementary school, I casually asked Ryan, “Maybe in a couple of years, we could have a daughter.” He wrapped his arms around me from behind and laughed. “Sure. Hopefully she’ll look just like you.” The memory fades, and I look down at my stomach. My hand rests gently over the small bump. I’m sorry, baby. You came at the wrong time. But I’ll love you with everything I have. Back home, I set the pregnancy report down on the table. Ryan notices it and picks it up. The smile disappears from his face. Jason comes over and looks at the report too. His eyes widen. He looks from the paper to me, his face suddenly tense. “You can’t have another baby.”
