第1章

The fourth time Ryan takes me to the courthouse to get married, we barely reach the door when he and my best friend Stella suddenly stop moving. I pull their arms as hard as I can, but neither of them moves an inch. I know exactly what this is. That stupid freeze game again. No warning. Someone counts down, everybody freezes, and whoever stays still the longest wins. When we went bungee jumping, we agreed all three of us would jump together, only for them to shove me off first and stand there without moving. I'm terrified of heights. By the time I climbed back up with shaking legs and asked why they did that, they still didn't react. Then they finally said, "We were playing freeze. First one to move or talk loses." When Ryan proposed, I shyly held out my hand, waiting for him to put the ring on me. He froze. My hand just hung there in the air. People walking by started whispering. "Is she forcing him to propose or what?" I cried until my makeup was ruined and turned to leave. That's when he finally put the ring on my finger. "God, you're such a crybaby. It was a joke." Stella linked her arm through mine. "Come on, Emma. How are you still not used to this?" I thought I'd get used to it eventually. But today, I remind them over and over before we leave. Don't play the game today. Not when we're supposed to sign the marriage papers. They start anyway. I'm so tired. I let go of their arms. I'll never get used to this game. I'm fucking done. People passing by are whispering again. "Why aren't they going in? Is something wrong?" "She came in a veil and everything, but that man clearly doesn’t want to marry her." "God, that’s embarrassing." The voices are quiet but I hear every word. Every word hurts. I look at Ryan. "Ryan, I'm asking you one last time. Are we doing this today or not?" He doesn't answer. He does not even look at me. I laugh at myself. I already know the answer. I just have to humiliate myself one more time. I let go of his hand and take two steps back. Surprise flashes across Ryan's face. But he still doesn't move. "Play by yourselves. I'm done." I turn and walk away. No footsteps behind me. The game isn't over, so they won't follow. I go home alone. It takes over an hour. No one calls. No one even texts to ask if I’m okay. I accept the promotion to New York headquarters and start packing. Everything I own barely fills half a suitcase. When I first moved in here, I had three full boxes. Then Stella suggested the freeze game. The loser had to hand my things over to her. From the necklace I saved three months of pay for, to the tiny wedding-vow card I rewrote ninety-nine times. And finally, my mom's brooch. The one she left me before she died. That day, I had a fever so bad I could barely stand. I begged Ryan to take me to the hospital. He and Stella just stood there frozen. I passed out before the game ended. He finally took me to the ER. Then he gave Stella my mom's brooch because he lost. I nearly got on my knees. "That's the only thing I have left from my mom. Please don't do this." His voice was soft, but every word hurt. "What do you want me to do? I lost fair and square. If you hadn't gotten sick, I wouldn't have lost." There were so many other times. Too many to count. I asked him once why they play the game but I'm the one who loses everything. He said, "Because we're a couple." I used to think that was sweet. Now it makes me sick. I'm putting the last of my clothes in the suitcase when the door finally opens. Stella looks at my suitcase and scoffs. "Seriously, Emma? Over one game? You're packing up and leaving?" She nudges Ryan. "Go make it up to her before she actually dumps you. Then you’ll be the one crying." Ryan grabs my hand. "Cut it out. I already got us another appointment with the county clerk Monday." "We won't play this time. I promise." Even now, he thinks I’m just making a scene. They didn’t think it was making a scene when they humiliated me outside the courthouse. But the second I want out, I’m the one making a scene. I take a deep breath and swallow everything I'm feeling. "Don't bother. We're done." Surprise flashes across Ryan's face. "Emma, be mad if you want, but don't start throwing around breakups." I pull my hand back. "I’m serious." I look him straight in the eye. "I’m done with your games. I’m done being your joke. We’re over." I take off the matching ring and set it on the table. Then I pull the creased wedding-vow card from behind my phone case and drop it in the trash. The smile finally drops off Ryan's face. "You were the one who wanted to get married, Emma. Don't come crying when you regret this." "Even if you begged on your knees, I wouldn't take you back." I shake my head. "I won't." Stella jumps in. "Emma, come on. It was a joke. Don't be so petty." "Just wait until Monday, and you'll finally get what you wanted." "But before that, he and I have to sign the papers to end our marriage first."

My hand stops on the zipper. Ryan says it like it is nothing. "It was just a bet. I lost, so I had to do it." "If you hadn’t thrown a fit and walked off at the courthouse, none of this would’ve happened." "Be good. I already got the papers ready for Monday to end my marriage with Stella. Once that’s done, I’ll marry you." I stare at him and suddenly remember. Every single time we tried to get married, something went wrong. His car broke down. His ID went missing. This time, when we were finally ready, they started that stupid game again. But when it was Stella's turn, everything went smoothly. It felt like even God didn't want us together. Stella grins beside him. "His punishment last time was making sure you two couldn’t get married three times. And he actually stuck to it." I look at Ryan, unable to believe it. So the three failed appointments were all planned. He ruined every one on purpose. And every time, I blamed my own bad luck like an idiot. Ryan sees my face change and reaches for my hand. "Babe, I didn't tell you because I knew you'd get mad. Relax. We'll go again Monday. It'll work this time." I yank my hand away. I'm laughing but tears are streaming down my face. "Go again for what? So you two can play another round? So you can humiliate me again?" "You two make me sick." "We're done. Play your games with each other. I'm out." I grab my suitcase and head for the door. Ryan tries to block me, but then Stella's voice rings out. "Three, two, one, freeze!" The game begins again. His footsteps stop. I drag my suitcase out and don't look back. ... Over the next few days, I get ready for New York. The doorbell rings. I think it's the movers. I open the door. It's Ryan. I'm actually surprised. In every fight we ever had, I was the one who gave in first. So when he holds out a box with the perfume that's been sitting in my cart forever and asks me to forgive him, I waver. I hate myself for it, but I do. I take the box and open it. A jack-in-the-box clown pops out in my face. I scream and throw it across the hall. I hear loud laughing from the stairwell. Stella steps out, laughing so hard she holds her stomach. "Don't be mad at him, Emma. That was his punishment for losing. I can't believe this idiot actually did it!" My chest goes cold. Ryan laughs and reaches for my hand. "Okay, that's enough. Come home with me." I pull away. "I told you. We're done." His smile fades. "Keep acting like this and it's gonna get ugly." Like I should be grateful he even came. I'm so tired. "I really don't want to be part of your games anymore." "It's just a game. Why are you acting like this?" He looks genuinely confused. But then his eyes land on something inside my apartment and the confusion turns to smugness. "So this is you breaking up with me? Keeping my stuff and Stella's stuff so you can sit here and cry over us?" I follow his gaze to the box of things I packed up in the corner. Our vacation photo from last year is sitting on top. I was going to return it all. I push the box toward him. "This is your stuff. Both of yours. Take it." His face hardens. "You're serious?" Stella finally speaks up. "Emma, you're seriously dumping him over a game? It was just a joke." I look at her. "I don't want to play. And I don't think it's funny." "Why do you two get to play while I'm the one who always gets hurt?" "You used my things as stakes. You turned my dignity and my life into part of your game." I push another box toward Stella. "Take it. We're done."

I barely nudge the box toward Stella, but she jerks back like I hit her hard and almost tumbles down the stairs. Ryan catches her instantly. The box crashes to the ground. The little ceramic figures we made for our third anniversary fall out and shatter. I reach down to pick up the girl figure's broken head. Ryan shoves me away hard. Ceramic shards dig deep into my palm. I suck in a breath from the pain. Ryan screams in my face. "If you're mad, take it out on me. Why the hell are you going after someone innocent?" Stella's eyes go red. She tugs at Ryan's sleeve, voice small. "It's fine. If I hadn't started this game, you two wouldn't be like this." "This is my fault. I'll just go." Tears fall right on cue. She turns to leave. Ryan grabs her arm. "You did nothing wrong. She's just being petty." He looks at me. "When did you get so bitter?" The irony almost makes me laugh. I hold up my bloody palm. "Ryan, I haven't even said it hurts." His eyes soften. He starts toward me. Stella's voice follows right on cue. "Ryan, my ankle really hurts. I think I twisted it." He stops and pulls his foot back. He looks at me coldly. "You brought this on yourself. If you hadn't pushed Stella, none of this would've happened." "Stay here and think about what you did. If you keep this up, don't show up Monday." He picks Stella up and walks out. The door slams shut. I sit alone, gritting my teeth, pulling ceramic pieces out of my palm one by one. I bandage my hand. I pick up the bloodstained pieces, pack everything into the box, and throw it in the trash. The heavy thud sounds like the end of us. That night, I see Stella's Instagram post. Ryan is down on one knee washing her feet. The caption: Teaching my bestie’s perfect boyfriend how to behave 😉 I stare at the photo. Ryan always told me a man washing a woman's feet was beneath him. Even after my car accident, when I couldn't move in bed, he never once helped wipe me down. Now he's doing it for Stella. I take a breath and type a comment. "No need to train him. He's yours." The post disappears a second later. Ryan blows up my phone. "What the hell was that comment?" "Everyone's seen it. People keep asking me what happened. Do you know what you're doing to her?" "Apologize. Right now. Or Monday is off." "Answer me!" I stare at the wall of messages. My eyes sting. His first thought isn't to ask if I'm okay. It's to ask why I told the truth and made Stella look bad. I don't reply. Another message comes in. "You like dragging people online? Fine. Let's see how you like it." My comment under Stella's post gets screenshotted and posted everywhere. It blows up fast. Everyone starts calling Stella the homewrecker. But it doesn't last. Ryan puts out a statement. "Stella Miller and I are legally married. Emma Reed is lying." He attaches their marriage certificate and a courthouse selfie. In the photo, their faces are pressed close together, smiling like newlyweds. Stella posts a video from a hospital bed. Her face is pale. The bandage on her wrist has blood on it. "I always saw her as my best friend. Even when she kept acting like my husband was her boyfriend, I didn't call her out. I didn't want to hurt her." "I never thought being nice would make her push this far!" She cries through the whole video. She looks like the victim. The internet flips overnight. My address and personal information get posted everywhere. My inbox fills with filth. Someone even digs up the video from outside the courthouse. "Look at her pawing at a married man, and she still has the nerve to call his wife a homewrecker." "She was like this in college too. At the proposal, she grabbed his hand and made him put the ring on her." "She was clearly forcing him to marry her!" Buried in all the hate, Ryan's message stands out. "Have you learned your lesson?" "Be a good girl and apologize. I'll still take you Monday." I look at my flight's boarding time. No need. I won't be here by then.
